Djoos was a 52% player without Orpik (the best possession Capitals defenseman) last year and a 48% player with him. Orpik without Djoos was a brutal 43%.

Mr. Tanner, what were differences in the game situations, scores, linemates and opposition when these players were split apart?

Bowey was awful last year. GMBM has spoken out that he will get his ice time this season. We'll see. I would like to think there is at least one dman in Hershey that give him some competition. Bowey will need to earn his ice time and it's no guarantee in my opinion.

Bowey actually played well, you have to consider that he mostly played with one of the worst players in the NHL when he did play.

Now I am confused. In your blog you state, "As for Madison Bowey, he's all offense and he can't defend.."

Well, I agree with your statement that he could not defend. He was constantly hemmed in the d zone and coughing up the puck. I watch the games and I can't see where that's all on Orpik. Either way, he gets another shot this year.

Either way, there is no excuse to play Orpik over him. Whether Bowey is a piece for the Caps moving forward or not, Orpik definitely isn't, and for all the faults of Bowey's rookie season, Orpik is worse.

Well his defense rating is terrible, but his numbers really improve away from Orpik. And when separated, Bowie does better.

Bowie should definitely be in the lineup

Do the caps have an actual caps blogger? or is Tanner filling in until someone steps forward who follows the caps closely?

He doesn't actually analyze or follow the Caps. He just looks at stats websites and make ill informed opinions with poor use of those stats.

someone who analyzes the caps and can provide actual insight into the team would be able to provide the response you're looking for.

i agree with this. i actually watched them play and a buddy of mine was a practice goalchie for the bears awhile ago and has been following the bears and caps closely for years.

we went to the stanley cup parade together. i'll ask him about the defence and what he thinks.

Trust me, I wasn't expecting him to answer. I'm just pointing out the half assed analysis.

Well the coach sees it differently than you. Therefore the coach is wrong

Imagine if the GM signed gormley runsblad or franson. Caps hands down would have best d in league.

If they had all 3 it would be the best top 4 in the history of the NHL. Because numbers...

SMH Tanner, 1 Djoos played 63 regular season games last year and every postseason game alongside Orpik and that duo as a 3rd pair was strong.

Bowey and Djoos started last year if you didnt notice and Bowey played 51 games more then half the season for a -3. Hes got a high ceiling but if you watched instead of looking at CHARTS! He got spun around on defense too many times and was out of place etc.

So itll be the same this year, Orpik/Bowey will split time on the 3rd pair probably similar 50/30, 60/20 type ratio unless Bowey in his 2nd year turns into a shutdown Dman they just can take out of the lineup.

As for the comment about Canes D and Preds D.. Preds D is 1 thing atleast by name recognition in top 4, not performance last year but Canes D thats another laughable statement. Canes D not even top 3-4 in nhl

At this point I have to assume Orpik is basically the 7th dman. I was never and Orpik fan per sé. That said, he was helpful to the Caps down the stretch. I'm not going to defend the poor underlying numbers. They are what they are. On the other hand, Bowey was extremely disappointing in his rookie season. Perhaps he rights the ship this year and or they can use him as trade bait.
